Meet Kathleen Carlson
Inspired by nature and the shifting qualities of light, water and atmosphere, Carlson’s paintings occupy a space between abstraction and landscape. Forms emerge and recede through veils of color; horizons appear only to dissolve again. Rather than describing a particular place, the works evoke the sensation and memory of one—a glimpse of sky, the movement of water, light passing through mist, or the changing colors of a distant horizon.
Carlson builds her compositions through layers of acrylic, oil and mixed media, carefully balancing transparent washes with more opaque passages of paint. Soft blues, aquas and muted neutrals move across many of the works, punctuated by moments of cobalt, pink, coral and yellow. Brushwork, drips and subtle traces of earlier layers remain visible, giving the paintings a sense of movement beneath their quiet surfaces.
